“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Some of us may not enjoy the taste of water (side eye lol), but were you aware that besides aiding the functioning of other body parts, it also benefits your singing voice? Occasionally, we cough not due to the microphone needing cleaning, but rather due to dehydration.
Knowledge truly is power and keeping your vocal cords moisturized hydration plays a crucial role in vocal health. When your vocal cords are well-hydrated, they remain supple and are less prone to tears and damage. Here are some hydration tips:
- Drink Water Regularly: Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily. Keeping a water bottle handy encourages consistent hydration throughout the day.
- Herbal Teas: Sipping on herbal teas, especially those with soothing properties like chamomile or ginger, can be beneficial. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, as they can dehydrate your body.
- Steam Inhalation: Using a steam inhaler or taking hot showers helps moisturize your vocal cords, especially during dry weather or when feeling congested.
- Humidity Matters: Use a humidifier in your home or practice space, particularly in dry seasons. Proper humidity can prevent dryness in your throat and nasal passages.
Tip: Pay attention to your body's signals. If your throat feels dry or scratchy, increase your water intake immediately.
