"How to plan your own personal retreat with God: A step-by-step Guide

Updated: Aug 19

A few years ago I was traumatized by losing five family members in one month and I was broken. I felt blessed to have people in my life checking on my family and in that season and one particular friend/family/brother kidnapped me and took me to the parish of Montego Bay with his family. I never understood it at that time but I was being taught how to come away. While I was there I was very isolated from everyone I didn't want to talk much and wanted to stay in my room and mope. Now that I look back, I laugh because what the adversary ment for evil God turned for my good and I have fallen in love with this practice ever since. It allowed for a spiritual intimacy I never knew I needed. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's crucial to find moments of tranquility and introspection. Trauma does not have to be the only reason to retreat but it also serves as a time to heal, rest and/or refuel or to receive divine intrusions for the next season and should be natural part of our lifestyle as believers. We take vacations from our jobs and active lives but have you ever thought you may just need a vacation with just you and the Lord?

Creating Your Retreat Time and Space

Where you go matters. Whether it's a cozy corner in your home, a serene spot in nature, or a dedicated room, the key is to choose a space that resonates with you. Consider decorating your retreat space with elements that evoke a sense of calm and serenity - think soft lighting, comfortable cushions, and soothing colors that soothe the senses.

Setting the Ambiance

Once you've established your retreat space, it's time to set the ambiance to enhance your spiritual experience. Soft background music or nature sounds can also elevate the ambiance and help you immerse yourself in moments of contemplation and prayer.

Create a retreat kit

By creating a retreat kit tailored to your needs, you can create an environment that allows for reflection, creativity, and spiritual growth. Here’s how to put together your own personal retreat kit,

Pack the following:

Bible: The foundation of your retreat. Choose a translation that resonates with you, and consider marking meaningful passages or highlighting verses that speak to your heart.

Journal or Notebook(s): Use these for notes, reflections, prayers, or insights that come to you during your retreat. Writing can help clarify your thoughts and deepen your understanding.

Bible Study Materials: Bring any studies you’re currently working on. This could include study guides, devotionals, or books that challenge and inspire you in your faith journey.

Tools for Reflection and Creativity

Tablet or Device (if desired): If you prefer digital resources, having your laptop or tablet can be helpful for accessing online materials, reading e-books, or writing your thoughts.

Pens, Highlighters, Colored Pencils: Use these to annotate your Bible, take notes, and add color to your journal entries. These tools can also unleash your creativity as you explore your thoughts visually.

Comfort Items

Tissues: Simple but useful. Having tissues on hand is essential for those moments of emotional release or prayer.

Drinks and Snacks: Stay hydrated and nourished, unless you are fasting. Consider bringing calming tea, water, or healthy snacks to keep your energy levels up.

Music and Sound

Ear Buds or Headphones:Perfect for immersing yourself in worship music or a calming playlist. Music can set the tone of your retreat and help you focus on your time with God.

Worship Music/Playlist: Create a playlist that uplifts your spirit and draws you closer to God. Include both contemporary worship songs, Instrumentals and traditional hymns that resonate with you.

Encouragement and Creativity

Creative Encouragement Items: Include anything that inspires creativity or connection to God. For instance, a digital camera can allow you to capture the beauty of creation around you during prayer walks. Photography can serve as a powerful reminder of God's artistry in the world.

Personal Comfort Activities: If you have hobbies like puzzles, drawing, or crafting, include those items. Engaging in creative activities can help quiet your mind and allow you to hear God’s voice more clearly.

Supplemental Materials

Consider including additional material that may enhance your retreat experience, such as:

Devotionals: Depending on the time of year, bring along devotionals that focus on themes like gratitude, renewal, reflection, or hope.

Prayer Books or Guides: These can provide structured prayers that might resonate with what you’re feeling.

Inspirational Quotes or Scriptures: Print or write down quotes that uplift you and keep them handy for motivation throughout your retreat.

As you gather these items for your personal retreat kit, remember that the goal is to create a space where you can connect with God, reflect deeply, and recharge spiritually. Tailor this kit to fit your unique habits and preferences, allowing it to become a sacred space for solitude, creativity, and divine connection. Enjoy your retreat and the planning process too!
